Meet the Scientist Part 2 - Science of Warming: What Thermographs Can Tell Us About Warming Effectiveness
As a result of physiologic responses to anesthesia, surgical patients are at risk of developing inadvertent perioperative hypothermia. Clinicians initiate preventive interventions such as forced air warming (FAW) to maintain patients' core temperature. This webinar is a continuation of our "deep dive" into the science behind heat transfer, forced air warming devices and the negative outcomes associated with anesthesia-induced hypothermia.

    Topics include:
    • Heat transfer from forced air warming (FAW) devices
    • Heat transfer formula
    • Negative outcomes associated with anesthesia-induced hypothermia

    About the Speaker

    John R. Stark, PhD

Dr. John Stark is a Research Specialist in 3M Healthcare’s Medical Solutions Division, where he specializes in bioheat transfer and fluid mechanics. His 5 years with 3M have been spent predominately working on the Bair Hugger product line. Before 3M, John completed his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Kansas, and has 33 academic publications over a wide range of applications, mainly focused on biological applications of heat transfer and fluid mechanics. This includes a recent book chapter in the text “Theory and Application of Heat Transfer in Humans”.  In addition to his work at 3M, John teaches graduate level mechanical engineering courses as an Adjunct Professor at the University of St. Thomas.

    Jenna Lindsay, BSN, RN

Jenna Lindsay, BSN, RN, has a background in Perioperative Nursing in a variety of surgical specialties. She started her nursing career as a circulating nurse at a large hospital in Minneapolis / St. Paul, Minn. and continued as an Assistant Clinical Manager for the Neuro/ENT team, Operating Room Education Coordinator, and Operating Room Manager. Jenna works with perioperative products in 3M’s Medical Solutions Division where she works on new product development and provides global education and support to clinicians. Jenna holds a BSN from Allen College in Waterloo, Iowa.

    Webinar Learning Objectives

    • Describe the physics and variables of heat transfer and the heat transfer equation
    • Relate how changing variables of the heat transfer equation affect heat transfer during forced air warming
    • Understand the outcomes which have been clinically shown to be impacted by perioperative hypothermia
